Parents guide to transforming climate grief

This Mother’s Day parents around Australia are preparing to take their children to the Climate Strikes on May 21 to call for Federal government action on climate. But how do we communicate about climate change with our children without giving them - and ourselves - anxiety?

A free online event Transforming Climate Grief on Monday May 10th, hosted by Australian Parents for Climate Action, will unpack answers to these big questions. The panel will delve into the personal story of TV presenter and author Jonica Newby, who went on a quest to heal her own climate grief.

Newby is a science reporter, TV presenter and director best known for her two decades on ABC TV’s popular weekly science program, Catalyst. Newby’s new book, “Beyond Climate Grief: A journey of love, snow, fire and an enchanted beer can” saw her travel around Australia in search of answers, connecting with bushfire affected communities, climate strikers, musician Missy Higgins and many more.

“The only way to live a good and happy life under the weight of this fearsome knowledge of climate change is do what you can to create the future you choose“ Newby, based on the NSW South Coast, writes in her book.

Parents will also hear first hand from inspirational 16-year-old Climate Striker Jasmine Bowtell from Manly whose community is at risk from a proposed gas plant, Pep11.

"Our water systems will be polluted, tourist industries will be ruined, and the livelihoods of my family and neighbours. I cannot sit back and watch my childhood be shovelled away by a government invested in dirty fossil fuels like gas. Gas isn’t the future and this proposal isn’t okay,“ Jasmine said.

Dr Susie Burke, psychologist at the Australian Psychological Society, also joins the panel as part of her mission to enhance community wellbeing and promote action on climate change.

“Look for heroes. Collect their stories. You need to help children see all the amazing things people are doing for the planet or the community. And ask, how can we join them?”, Burke, from Castlemaine, said when interviewed by Newby for her book.

Join "Transforming Climate Grief" on Monday 10 May 2021 from 7:30pm to 9pm with special guests author Jonica Newby, Climate Striker Jasmine Bowtell, and Psychologist Susie Burke. Register online for your free ticket at: ap4ca.org/climate_grief
