The carbon offsets industry is like the Wild West. It's comprised of both voluntary markets run by for-profit exchanges, alongside government markets like Australian Carbon Credit Units or ACCUs. The Australian government market was the subject of a federal review following substantial accusations of fraud, including offsets schemes that are actually resulting in emissions increases(!). The review, led by Ian Chubb, the former Chief Scientist, was by all accounts a misfire. And here’s why.

The Safeguards Mechanism - far from safe

The Australian Labor government will reform the Safeguard Mechanism. And not a moment too soon. It was badly designed and badly implemented by the previous government, allowing major polluters to continue polluting (and in many cases to increase their annual emissions) with nary a slap on the wrist. As parents, we know a thing or two about bad behaviour; when your child repeatedly defies you, you follow through with a consequence - not sweets. And that's what's been missing from the Safeguard Mechanism.

Parents for Climate was built from the ground up by concerned parents like you, volunteering their time to ensure a safer future for our children.

We are solutions-focused and non-partisan, with the mission of influencing government and business to take more action on climate.

Our volunteers are actively engaged in a range of activities that support national and local campaigns and are supporting the organisation in creating a parent powered movement for positive climate action in Australia.
