Parents for Climate welcomes the Queensland LNP to government.
Nic Seton, CEO of Parents for Climate, said the election result shows that Queenslanders supported the LNP’s decision to vote in favour of strong 2035 emissions reduction targets.
“Queensland voters, including regional Queenslanders, voted in a party with an ambitious climate pollution reduction target, and want to see that target achieved as promised.
“Queensland is already a world leader in rooftop solar uptake, with many families enjoying the financial benefits of lower energy bills. And Queensland schools have led the country in installing air conditioning powered by cheap rooftop solar energy - keeping kids safe now and into the future. We call on the LNP Government to extend these initiatives to childcares and low-income households that are currently locked out of these cost savings,” said Mr Seton.
“We look forward to seeing the LNP deliver on their promise of reducing emissions by 75% by 2035. We hope to see more detail on the LNP’s plan for achieving their emissions reduction target within their first 100 days in office.
“Delaying the transition to renewables— by acting slowly, or by expanding gas production, and extending coal fired power stations—puts the LNP’s target and their commitment to Queenslanders at risk.
“With many families still recovering from last summer’s extreme weather, and another hot and unpredictable summer around the corner, parents and communities are rightly concerned about climate pollution for the safety of their families.
“The LNP needs to confirm that it will continue to roll out wind, solar, hydro and batteries at a rate that will enable a smooth transition from coal-fired energy as soon as possible,” Mr Seton said.
“We’ve had constructive meetings with the Queensland LNP to date, and we look forward to discussing the priorities of Queensland parents with the Premier and Cabinet Ministers in the months to come.”
