On Thursday 27 August, brave parents gathered outside NSW Parliament carrying something incredibly powerful: portraits of their children.
We were there to remind decision-makers that the children whose futures are being shaped by today's decisions don't get a vote, a seat at the table or a say in what happens next.
But their parents do. And they showed up - thank you!
The gathering came just days before a decision is expected on the proposed extension of Hunter Valley Operations (HVO), one of Australia's largest coal mines.
If approved, mining could continue until 2045 at HVO North and 2042 at HVO South, with the project expected to generate around 809 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over its lifetime. That is the equivalent to seven times NSW states annual emissions from one project.
A fair deal means a safe climate, but it also means a fair future for coal communities and the workers and families who depend on them.
Parents for Climate is calling on the NSW Government to stop approving new and expanded coal mines, set binding emissions targets for the coal sector, and properly fund a fair transition for coal communities.
