Protect What You Love: A Parent-Powered Climate Campaign

On a blustery Saturday morning in February, 30 Victorian Surf Coast families gathered on the sand with buckets, spades, and our federal campaign message: “Protect What You Love.” Together, they built sandcastles for climate action—watched by federal politicians, candidates, and local media.

A month later, 20 more families on the Central Coast in NSW did the same.
These family centred events captured hearts, headlines, and the attention of decision-makers.

They are just a small snaphot of what our incredible parent-powered movement has been bringing to life across the country.

Since October 2024, our local action groups have powered 68 community events and connected with over 4,000 people across the country. From yard signs to family picnics, from toy swaps to MP and candidate meetings, Parents for Climate members have shown what it means to show up for the next generation.

Week after week, parents, grandparents, carers, and kids stepped up—organising, creating, and connecting. Driven by love and fierce hope, our community flooded social media, wrote heartfelt letters to MPs, showed up in local media, and kept climate action on the national agenda in the lead up to the federal election. Together, we shared the message that Later is Too Late with more than one million Australians.

Here are just a few highlights from our people-powered campaign:

  • 16,000 flyers delivered by mums, dads, and kids on scooters, backpacks bouncing.

  • Climate family picnics full of laughter, yard signs, and colourful craft.

  • Three clothes and toy swaps, helping over 200 families cut costs and waste.

  • 3,000+ yard signs planted in front yards and windows around the country.

  • 83 meetings with MPs and candidates since October—parents and kids speaking truth to power.

  • Three new local action groups in Coffs Harbour, Bathurst and Margaret River - supporting families in regional areas to take action.

As Sydney mum Jess shared:

“Being part of Parents for Climate was just what I needed this election. I didn’t feel I could do much, but you gave me a clear, positive way to contribute. It helped me feel connected to something bigger—and it’s been a joy to meet others in my local group.”

And from Sophie, a new group leader in regional NSW:

“It’s been fun so far, and I’m excited to build a strong Parents for Climate base here for the next government.”

The result?

In an election dubbed a “referendum on energy,” families made it clear: we choose clean, affordable, future-proof solutions—not expensive distractions like nuclear. Even in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis, millions of Australians voted to cut bills AND protect kids’ futures.

To every parent, carer, grandparent, kid and community member who contributed over the past seven months:
thank you. Every action, conversation, donation, and pledge made our movement stronger—and harder to ignore.

So what comes next?

First, we pause. We rest. We reflect.

But then we roll forward.

In the coming weeks and months, we’ll continue connecting with MPs, building local groups, and growing our movement. Because our greatest superpower? A locally organised, parent-powered climate network. And we’re just getting started.
