Review: The Giants

Have you seen The Giants? I was inspired to rewatch this incredible film after recently meeting Dr Bob Brown in Brisbane. In a tumultuous time - turning towards the magnificence of trees is just what I needed.

The Giants is a stunning documentary that conveys two stories in parallel - the life cycle of Australia’s giant trees and the life of a “giant” in activism in my birth state and beyond, Dr Bob Brown. Ultimately, what this documentary conveys is our inextricable links with trees and the web of life.

One of Australia's most successful documentaries of 2023, The Giants inspired national rallies, put deforestation on the political agenda, and mobilized countless individuals and community groups to stand up for forests.

The Giants has all the feels - awe, exasperation, gratitude, frustration, inspiration and a big dose of determination. Not to mention the extraordinary visuals that gave me goosebumps throughout.

One of the most life affirming films I have ever seen, The Giants clearly highlights our roles as protectors and immense the possibilities that come from being guided by a deep love of the places, ecosystems and people that are dear to us.

It ends with a call to action that is a profound reminder about what we are capable of and of the choice to create a legacy that we can all be proud of.

Highly recommended viewing! Gather your friends and watch this together, watch it with your kids - show them the people who are standing up to protect nature and their future; host a community screening and raise money for a favourite environment or climate action charity.
