One thing we hear time and time again from parents, grandparents, and carers across the country is how much more empowered and hopeful they feel when they're connected with others who care deeply about taking climate action—especially when those connections happen in person.
That’s the magic of our growing network of parent-powered action groups. These local groups provide vital support, inspiration, and community—both on the ground and through our national network. Personally, it’s one of the things I love most about Parents for Climate. It’s the supportive, inspiring connections I have made over the past 4 years that have helped me through many moments of frustration and despondency.
A Warm Welcome Back to Coffs Harbour!
This month, we’re thrilled to highlight and celebrate the relaunch of the Coffs Harbour Parents for Climate group! The fabulous Coffs Harbour team: Amy, Kath, Kate, Donna, Bec and Kyle
The group is reigniting momentum in their regional community. Their focus? Amplifying climate solutions ahead of the federal election and building lasting networks that will keep the climate conversation front and centre—well beyond polling day.
They’ve already hit the ground running, distributing colourful yard signs and securing candidate pledges in the Cowper electorate. And to officially mark their relaunch, the group hosted a vibrant, family-friendly picnic at the bustling Jetty Markets.
It was a joyful day full of connection, creativity and purpose. Families from all walks of life—tradies, teachers, health professionals, retirees, and young climate champions—came together to talk, learn, share, and take action. The photos say it all—sunshine, laughter, and powerful community energy!
Engaging the Whole Family
We know that when families show up together, they create powerful ripples of change. That’s why our events often include creative activities for kids—from climate-themed crafts and drawings about what they love and want to protect, to writing heartfelt letters to MPs and candidates. These small but mighty acts give children an outlet to express their feelings and help them feel part of something bigger.
Climate Conversations are the Centre of Change
At the core of all we do are conversations—real, open, heart-led dialogues that invite people in, build trust, and turn passive concern into action.
During the Coffs Harbour Family Picnic, the group set up a friendly and approachable stall, complete with a short survey that engaged over 60 families. This not only helped them understand the community’s climate hopes and concerns but also provided a gateway to deeper dialogue. What made it especially powerful was the diverse representation—health professionals discussed the health impacts of climate change, while tradies spoke about the real-world effects of extreme weather on their work and communities and their role in implementing climate solutions locally.
By creating a safe, welcoming space for people to ask questions, share stories, and connect over shared values, the Coffs group is helping to shift the conversation from “What can I do?” to “What can we do together?”
Kudos and Gratitude
Huge shoutout to Bec and the amazing Coffs Harbour team for creating such an energising, impactful, and inclusive event. Your creativity, warmth, and dedication are inspiring!
And a heartfelt thank you to Gemma, the inaugural group leader, whose hard work and vision helped build the strong foundations that this new chapter is standing on.
