It’s official! The Blue Mountains Parents for Climate group have become Binfluencers! Their quarterly kids’ clothes and toy swap events have recently earned them a prestigious Blue Mountains City Council award, recognizing their significant efforts in reducing waste and consumption. This incredible team, led by dynamic Climate Mums Dr Jenna Condie and Dr Liora Ballin, has been awarded for their outstanding contributions to sustainability in their local community.
Embracing the Binfluencer Spirit
In a world where doom and gloom often dominate the headlines, it’s refreshing to celebrate the positive actions of those dedicated to making a difference. The term “Binfluencer” is a creative twist on the modern concept of influencing. Unlike the airbrushed influencers of social media, Binfluencers put their heart and soul into making the world a better place. They inspire others through their genuine actions, not for likes or vanity, but for the love of their community and environment.
From Trash to Treasure
Group co-leader Jenna shared -
We know that many families are looking for ways to save money and live more sustainably. We saw an opportunity to engage local families and contribute to reducing the clothing and toy consumption and waste, so we ran with it. It’s been a win-win situation! We encourage families everywhere to Swap before you shop.”
Award-Winning Efforts
The Blue Mountains Parents for Climate were category winners in the AVOID 18yrs+ section for their remarkable work with the Blue Mountains Children’s Toy and Clothes Swaps. Since launching these community events in November 2022, they have hosted six seasonally themed swaps. From the outset, these events have been incredibly popular, and the group has also secured local council grant funding to continue their efforts. These events have not only reduced waste but have also fostered a sense of community and shared responsibility.
The Binfluencer Awards
The Binfluencer Awards featured several categories, each highlighting different aspects of sustainability:
- AVOID: Celebrating those combatting unnecessary consumption, disposable goods, or single-use materials.
- REUSE: Honoring individuals who creatively reuse items, whether for their original purpose or a new function.
- RECYCLE: Recognizing those who recycle materials by breaking them down and repurposing them into something new.

We have a growing team of fabulous people putting these events together. We are also working on other actions geared towards ensuring a safe climate future for our children and future generations. I’m so inspired by everyone who gets involved with these events and our group - it gives me a lot of hope for the kind of world we can create together.”
